Now is the perfect time of year for short escapes, because more ships cruise from close to home than at any other time of year. 

While the standard cruise remains a week, you can also find awesome shorter cruises on great ships. 

In February, gorgeous Ruby Princess will depart on 4- and 5-night cruises from Los Angeles, supplementing the usual 3- and 4-night Carnival departures from Long Beach that are available year-round. 

You could take Ruby to Cabo San Lucas at the peak of whale migration season and miss only a few days of work.

Flights to LAX are among the best values out there.  You can still take one of the shorter cruises, but why not leverage your air to cruise a week to the Mexican Riviera or along the California Coast? 

Better yet, take a couple of weeks and cruise all the way to Hawaii!
