Happy 4th of July!
Published Saturday, July 4th 2020 - Updated Tuesday, July 7th 2020If like me you enjoy community fireworks to celebrate our great country, I hope you were treated to one of the best displays ever at Mount Rushmore last night, even if it was on a computer or TV screen rather than in the sky above you.
Whether you missed the Mount Rushmore fireworks show or want to share it with friends and family, you can watch it at the top of this article (no politics, just Americana!).
By the way, you owe it to yourself to visit Mount Rushmore. In fact, in this summer of the cruise ban, you hopefully will take a trip to visit a national park, which of course is an inexpensive destination the entire family can enjoy, thanks to insightful American leaders.
Assuming there isn't a national park near you --- though if you look at a map, you may be surprised how close one is to you --- then visit a state park or campground. For many of us who now have matured into world travelers taking cruise ships to amazing places beyond our wildest childhood imaginings, our travels started with road trips and camping.
Driving through our beautiful country remains a wonderful experience, and if you're not on a tight budget, you can splurge to take a packaged tour, where a guide accompanies you to explain the significance of everything you encounter, so that you may fully appreciate the history of this great country.
In this age of COVID-19 fears, tour companies have taken additional precautions that ensure you have a safe experience every time you get off the coach for excursions, meals and hotel stays.
Cruises will take similar precautions when they return in October, as exemplified by the Virgin Voyage Well video shared in a recent post linked here .
About now, I usually recommend a big ship Canada/New England cruise --- one of the best places to fully appreciate our country's founding --- but Canada has shut its ports to big ships this year. A small ship like Victory or American Cruise Lines might be the perfect alternative, though of course a smaller, more luxurious ship will always cost a bit more.
By the way, if you want to have fun in the sun, remember that many great destinations including Mexican beach resorts, Greece, Tahiti and several Caribbean Islands already welcome tourists. Hawaii will open August 1, and October cruises are on the calendar.
Whatever you decide to do today, Happy Independence Day to you and your family!
