Most people initiate cruising with a weekend getaway.

That's a great way to experience a sea vacation firsthand, especially when you can drive to the home port.

If you're going to invest your time and money on flights, however, you should be thinking about a longer cruise.

It just makes sense.

The longer the flights, the easier it is to justify a longer vacation.  With a longer cruise, you might visit two or three times as many bucket list ports.

Maybe you'll want to add a few days before or after a cruise, as Julie and I did when we spent extra nights in Lisbon to see more of Portugal.  We then stopped in Madrid on our way home to complement our other great ports in Spain and complete a full-blown Iberian discovery.  While it required an extra flight to go back to Madrid, which is far from the coast, it was still closer than it would have been from Los Angeles.

You can even combine completely different destinations, possibly meshing two separate vacation styles, like a packaged tour and a cruise.  Lining up the start and end dates for distinctly separate destinations, however, is trickier than it may first appear.

While you're stretching your vacation schedule to make the most of your air costs, you may well ask yourself, "Where to next?"

Pick a destination that excites you, and then find a way to make it happen.

We all can only reach our dream destinations one vacation at a time.

"Better service leads to better trips."
