Where were you at this time last year?
Published Wednesday, September 25th 2019 - Updated Wednesday, September 25th 2019Ever since our youngest child went away to college, Julie and I have taken to traveling in autumn.
Why?
Summer crowds have dissipated, and with the exception of European river cruises for which wine harvesting season is their highest demand time, prices are moderate.
For the Caribbean, prices are at their lowest, but if you've paid a bit of attention to the news lately, you'll understand that hurricane season's zenith has a great deal to do with that.
We just returned from Bermuda, where our son Jay married his brilliant bride Sasha in a destination wedding that exceeded our expectations.
Last year, we enjoyed another "trip of a lifetime," visiting Portugal, Spain and the Riviera aboard an amazing cruise ship. Like everyone else who has done a similar trip, we are ready to return. And either fall or spring are the perfect times for this region.
In 2016, we did another trip for which this is the ideal season, Canada/New England. It should be noted that the spectacular changing of the leaves makes this a peak season for this itenerary, but with inexpensive domestic air, it is still quite affordable.
These and other vacations have come to be landmarks of our passing years. Julie says we need to go while our health allows us to do so, and that is indeed a very salient point.
If you want to go this fall, then we might just be able to take advantage of last minute deals.
Even retired people usually need to plan in advance, however. By doing so, you can take advantage of terrific advance booking promotions like "3 for Free" with Princess or free air on select cruises and river cruises with other suppliers currently.
Of course, maybe you prefer to travel at another time of year.
Maybe you're eying a summer cruise to Alaska for next year, or a South America, Antarctica or Australia cruise in December or January, when it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
The point is that when you look back at your life, you don't want to just see a bunch of Simpsons and Suits reruns.
