A couple of days ago I rode the Metro Train up to Staples Center/L.A. Live, showing my nephew Brett and his buddy Hayden the route.

Without my assistance, they probably would have realized they needed to avoid trouble, change trains at Rosa Parks Station and get off at Staples, but this way I could see that for myself and avoid worrying needlessly for the rest of their visit in Los Angeles.

On the train, a woman sat beside me and began perusing a furniture ad.  "Looking for a new couch?" I queried.

She smiled.  "My daughter just bought a new condo, and she needs a couch."

"My wife wanted a new couch, so she gave ours to my son."

"I don't have a couch," she said.  "And my daughter lives in Ohio anyway."

"What made her move there?"

"Oh, she didn't move.  I'm from Ohio.  I came out to California on vacation and was in a train accident, so I had to stay while my case was settled."

As we slowed for the last stop before Rosa Parks Station, I called over to Brett that we'd be changing trains soon.

"I'm taking my nephew to the X-games up at Staples Center."

"Oh, I don't know where that is."

"Staples Arena is where the Lakers play."

"Like I said, I'm from Ohio.  I've only been out here twelve years."

"Twelve years?"

"Yeah, it's hard to believe it's been that long.  I had to stick around until that train case was settled.  And then, right after that, I was in a truck accident, and that still isn't settled yet."

Fortunately, my stop arrived, or perhaps I would have been there for her next trajedy.

It does make me wonder how many more times this woman will have to be in accidents before she learns whatever it is she came here to learn.
