Happy Presidents' Day!
Published Monday, February 19th 2024 - Updated Monday, February 19th 2024How blessed we have been to live in a free country made possible by two great Presidents celebrated on this day.
Technically, I hear it is just Washington's Birthday in federal law, but when I was in school, we had a day for Abraham Lincoln as well as for George, so I celebrate them both on this day.
The Father of Our Country, George Washington, could have declared himself King with the blessing of the other Founding Fathers, but instead he chose to leave office after two terms, freely turning over the reins to whoever might be selected by the electorate to replace him. Oh, and he also led the Continental Army to victory over the most powerful military in the world and helped establish our republic.
Abraham Lincoln made the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution applicable to all native-born and naturalized Americans. And he also won a major war. He also found time to essentially start our national parks system by ceding what became Yosemite to California "upon the express conditions that the premises shall be held for public use, resort, and recreation; (which) shall be inalienable for all time."
Oddly, we recently had protestors throw pink powder on the display case in which the Constitution is displayed, showing complete contempt for what makes our country great. They inevitably hid behind the Constitution's protection and were probably home in time for dinner.
Let's hope none of us encounter any such fools today or any other time.
President's Day is a great time to remember the opportunity we each have to explore our country's birth on a land tour or cruise through gorgeous New England and up into Canada.
What used to be primarily an autumn cruise is now available throughout the summer.
Shouldn't 2024 or 2025 be the year for you to get back in touch with your love of the USA?
God bless America!
Wes
