Happy First Caribbean Cruise Discovery Day!
Published Monday, October 10th 2022 - Updated Monday, October 9th 2023Thanks, Christopher Columbus, for setting sail to cruise the world. Without you or an adventurer like yourself, we would not have Caribbean cruises, much less the modern cruise industry.
Most of us take cruises to specific destinations. You intended on finding a western route to India, which you did not discover.
Instead, you landed in the Caribbean, and everyone reading this blog, which unfortunately due to your death about 600 years ago does not include you --- which might make some ask why does Wes address Mr. Columbus? --- can benefit from your amazing discovery of sunny beaches and sunny skies.
Much as you found yourself in a different destination than planned, one destined to yield much greater riches, many cruisers find themselves seeking fun and finding a new perspective, a more positive light on what previously seemed to be harsh reality. A light that shines bright when we return home and return to the daily grind.
So, thank you, Christopher Columbus, a great Italian explorer, not only brave enough to cruise into the vast expanse of the deep blue sea without a reliable map, but who had the dedication to his cause to keep pitching his idea for world cruises to anyone who would listen, finally finding a friendly ear on Queen Isabella of Spain.
And huge kudos to Queen Isabella, who deserved the trophy for Woman of the Year many times, including in 1492, but never won it...mostly because it didn't exist during her lifetime. She showed the way for future venture capitalists to make fortunes backing risky ideas that might yield big rewards. Without her vision, capitalism itself may not have been possible, and none of us would have the means to take cruises not only to the Caribbean but all over the world.
Cruise ship captains have reliable charts to follow and plenty of Margaritas, so there's no risk of scurvy.
"Better service leads to less scurvy!"
