As long as you're flying to Europe, why not fully explore your departure port?

Looking into land extensions or even simply hotel rates in famous cities can be a bit of a rude awakening, helping us to more fully appreciate the relative value of cruising.

On a cruise, not only do we have comfortable accommodations and transportation to some of the greatest places in the world, we enjoy gourmet meals, world class entertainment and a convivial atmosphere in the company of like-minded new friends.

Compared to that, a land stay can seem quite pricey and hard to execute.

Nonetheless, Julie and I usually tack on a day or two on our own, getting a relatively inexpensive hotel and perhaps a Viator tour or two.

Having returned from Egypt, where we enjoyed a hosted land stay in a deluxe hotel with excursions included before our Nile River cruise, we are now spoiled.

And it doesn't necessarily cost more than DIY, once you get to the bottom line of how much you actually spend on those unexpected incidental items.
