A cruise ship's on board experience alone would be enough for you to enjoy a great vacation.

When you cruise into port, however, you'll probably want to go ashore.

You should expect to spend a little dinero to get the most of a port, even if you don't purchase top excursion choices from the cruise line.

Just outside the pier in Cabo San Lucas, for example, Julie and I recently bought a cheap whale watching experience --- I wouldn't exactly call it an excursion --- that turned out great, so we bought a snorkel trip the next morning from the same guy.  While not seamless or deluxe by any means, both experiences were fun.

To get the most from any port, you should at a minimum have a general idea of what possible activities and attractions await, even if that just comes do wn to reading the cruise line's introduction to the port in the morning bulletin delivered to your stateroom or smartphone.

Watching the port presentation live or on your stateroom TV is better.

Doing a bit of advance research before leaving home not only prepares you for your trip but in some ways stretches your vacation high.  I'm always happy to share tips on things to do.

While you can wing it when revisiting a favorite port, shore excursions help you get the most of your valuable vacation days, especially when you're traveling far from home on the "trip of a lifetime."
