Most people consider late spring/early summer and early autumn to be the perfect times for European river cruises.  The weather is ideal, and summer vacationers aren't out in full force, but of course prices usually peak along with demand.

For something completely different, consider a Christmas Markets river cruise.

It's a gorgeous time of year, with wonderful aromas and flavors of the season everywhere you go.

Expect chilly weather.  You'll want to bring hats, sweaters, mittens and winter coats, which might mean you have to temporarily ditch your "only carry-on luggage" approach to flights.

If you're ready to try something different, Viking currently has select Danube River cruises in late November at lead rates you've read about and hoped applied to the first week in June, but winter is the time of travel when those great rates tend to be.

You could cruise on AmaWaterways, though you might be less inclined to use one of their available bicycles in nippy November or December.

All-inclusive Uniworld currently hasChristmas Market dates or perfect wine season departures on the Magnificent Moselle and Rhine.

Which will you choose?

P.S. If what you really want in a vacation is sunshine accompanied by palm trees, beaches and the deep blue sea, a Christmas markets river cruise is about as far off base as you can get, but I'm happy to share info on warm weather alternatives for your holidays.  How about a family cruise over New Year's from San Diego on a gorgeous big ship? Call me for more details.
