Basic biology says we all have fathers, but all fathers are not created equal.

Unfortunately, we live in a time when half of American children grow up without a father in the home.

So, if you have a father who stayed active in your life, you are blessed.

Statistically, it is one of the best indicators of whether you will avoid living in poverty.

For boys, it is even worse.  Criminal records are all too frequently the legacy of being raised without a father.

So, if you have a father in your life, or perhaps an uncle or Sunday school teacher who took you under his wing, consider yourself blessed.

Despite this truth, some carry grudges about dads who were tough on them, or they regret that their fathers didn't spend as much time playing catch with them as they would have liked.

Only later may we realize that tough fathers were putting us back on the right track, and the reason they didn't have time or energy for throwing a ball was they were working long hours to honestly earn shoes for you similar to the ones that the neighbor kids wore.

As children, we may not understand, but by the time we're adults?

We should all come around to the realization that our parents were just people not too different from ourselves, doing the best they knew how to do at the time.

You had the perfect father for you, because if you are reading this, you did not fall into a life of crime and poverty.

You have interest in travel, which translates into fascination with life experiences and enlightenment.

Presumably, you also have the financial resources and time to travel.

That indicates your dad did something right.  Likely, he did a whole lot right.

Thank him.

And if you are a dad who does his best to be a good role model for your children and others, thank you.

You deserve a cruise.  Maybe travel with your own kids.  Maybe travel with your father or father-in-law.
