Barefoot Bar & Grill in San Diego
Published Sunday, September 27th 2009 - Updated Sunday, September 27th 2009Yesterday I saw a great billboard for Holland America in San Diego, a city many great ships will be using for a home port from now until late spring. It said, “First Class non-stops from San Diego,” with a picture of a cruise ship. Cruising from close to home makes vacations easy and convenient. If you're cruising from San Diego, take some time to explore one of the best cities in the world before or after your cruise, even if you aren't flying in from somewhere else in the world.
One of my favorite spots in all of San Diego is Paradise Point on Mission Bay. You can rent jet skis, sail boats and lots of other fun toys, or just hang out on the beach. After a day in the sun, we've often headed to the Barefoot Bar.
On Sunday, Julie and I had been visiting her mother in Rancho San Diego, about twenty minutes inland from Mission Bay, and we decided to take the opportunity to meet up with Christy, her best friend from elementary school, as well as Julie's sister Jacque and our brother-in-law Mike, at the Barefoot Bar for sunset drinks.
The drinks aren't cheap, at $9 for a rum and Diet Coke, $6.50 for an import beer or $4.75 for the cheapest Bud Light Draft, it's still cheaper than flying to the Caribbean or Hawaii for a drink. The setting on the bay is perfect, accented by the occasional seagull or sailboat.
The food is a little pricey too, but it has always been delicious. Julie and I were still full from a big lunch with Julie's mother at the Sycuan Golf Course restaurant, but the others shared a Chinese Chicken Salad, which split in half nonetheless made two large salads which they said were great.
Jacque and Mike were staying at the nearby Hyatt, so they biked over, which turned out to be as smart as it was fun. With some kind of Pacific Island festival in process across the street, traffic was somewhat nightmarish on this day, but it is usually easy to get there. Check it out some time.
