With summer cruises already open for select itineraries in the Caribbean, Greece, Iceland and Bermuda, clouds finally seem to be clearing with the USA and European governments.

You'll need a Covid-19 vaccine for the foreseeable future, and probably tests besides that, but like circus trick riders ready to start the show, most of us are ready to jump through a hoop or two to get back on the horse.

If you can't justify getting vaccinated for your own personal health, consider it in the same vein as carrying government-issued photo ID to board a plane, passports and sometimes visas to travel abroad, and proof of Yellow Fever vaccinantion to visit a third world rainforest.  The jungle has just gotten bigger and the vaccine more universal in number of destinations and modes of travel requiring it.

While September seems to be clearing from the mists, there's hope for August or even July for destinations beyond those early stars that already became available.

If you're like my friends Brion and Rita, whose California Coastal Cruise with Princess Cruises scheduled for July 10 seems to be on the crux, we still don't have any definitive word.

The problem of governments holding back the official word of when cruising can resume as normal is that cruise executives can't snap their fingers to resume service.

It takes months to bring in staff and train them on new protocols, but in a very big bright spot, the CDC will now allow cruises to return to service without doing test cruises, as long as essentially all passengers and crew have been vaccinated and tested at the time of sailing.

Besides, cruise lines have been operating in foreign markets (no American guests) for months, with about a half million cruisers having fun without any incidents involving Covid-19 that ruined the fun or resulted in quarantines.

Lots of other protocols will still be instituted to make cruising safer than ever.

So, if you want to travel, get vaccinated and pack your bags.  If you aren't willing to take those steps, settle in for another year in lazy town.
