Once a year, Americans set our clocks back an hour, unless we live in Arizona.

The rest of the time, the clock moves relentlessly forward.

We only have complete control over the present, but the future arrives sooner than we expect, as the minutes, hours, days, months and years seem to accelerate in passing.

It's good to occasionally ask ourselves, as Wayne Dyer used to advise us in his orations, "What would I do if I only had six months to live?"

Six months seems a good time frame.  It's enough time to plan something beyond day-to-day considerations like where to have lunch or whether to watch "Treadstone" live or record it.

It's not intended to make you shirk household responsibilities or blow off your job, much less spend your life savings on all the pie you can eat tomorrow.

You want to maintain your health, living standards and long term financial security, but too often we find ourselves looking back at the year and wondering what happened to it.

I've found writing a Christmas letter every year helps me remember all the blessings in my life, and over the years, vacations always mark significant milestones.

For me, in fact, vacations are frequently the landmarks that help me orient my memories of what happened during a particular year.  The fact that I write a pretty detailed e-Diary about my travels that includes references to different books I was reading and thoughts about random issues seemingly unrelated to the trip helps.

In my travels and also the posts I write after the trip has ended, I frequently find myself reliving memories from long ago brought to mind unexpectedly.

It all helps me put my entire life in perspective, enhancing my sense of gratitude to God, my loving family and friends like you.

To get to that future requires some planning in the present.

Have you made reservations for your next trip?

Maybe it is time to do that, so you don't accidentally miss the best moments of your life that you never got around to actually living.

"Better service leads to better trips!"
