Cruises continue to evolve. 

Many cruise lines have upgraded their wifi programs to broaden bandwidth for faster connections and lower prices.  Some offer unlimited internet as either an amenity-menu choice or, in the case of most river cruises and some upscale lines, as standard. 

Increasingly, you can access intranets on board ships that include items like the daily schedules or the ability to book excursions or future cruises.  You can even message friends and family who are on the same voyage, making it easier to meet at the art auction or for lunch. 

Princess Medallion Class, which has been rolling out across the fleet, aims to take this to the next level. 

The Ocean Medallion itself, which is about the size of a 50 cent piece, will act as a sort of concierge for you. 

Want a drink? 

Don't get up from your lounge chair.  Just order on your smart phone. 

Want to enter your stateroom? 

No need to scan a room key, because Medallion recognizes you as the proper occupant and unlocks your door. 

As you walk through the ship, you may be surprised to see that video screens feature on board events that may be of particular interest to you personally, similar to those billboards from the futuristic Tom Cruise movie, "Minority Report."
